Text: Life as a teenager in Britain

My name is Aisha, and I'm 15 years old. I live in Manchester, in the north of England. I go to a comprehensive school, which is like most schools in Britain — you don't have to pay to go there.

School starts at 8:45 and finishes at 3:15. We wear a uniform: a blue blazer, white shirt, and grey trousers or skirt. I don't mind the uniform, actually. It saves time in the morning!

My favourite subjects are English literature and history. I hate maths — I find it really difficult. At my school, we have to study maths, English, and science until we are 16. Then we can choose which subjects to continue for our GCSE exams.

After school, I usually go to the library or hang out with my friends at the park. On Saturdays, I work part-time at a charity shop. I earn £4.50 an hour, which isn't much, but it's good experience.

One thing that bothers me is the pressure of social media. Everyone posts their perfect life online, and it makes you feel like you're missing out. I try to limit my screen time, but it's hard.

I'm not sure what I want to do after school. Maybe university, maybe an apprenticeship. My parents want me to go to university, but I think I'd prefer to get some real-world experience first.
